The worldwide popularity of Sudoku may be traced to the universal nature of numbers. Janice Witham, the Canadian-born Australian who builds JANRIC Classic Sudoku for Creators Syndicate, said in an emailed interview that even though numbers are involved, it’s not a math puzzle.

“I believe Sudoku appeals to people of many ages because the rules are so simple and the only solving strategies required are logical reasoning and the process of elimination.”

Witham wrote travel stories and later started compiling word finds. She said she’s lost count of the hours it takes to compile the puzzles, but “I know I have used up 354 pencils and 167 erasers so far.”

Though numbers traditionally have been used for Sudoku puzzles, any set of symbols or even colours can be used instead. Solving the puzzle does not involve any mathematical relationship among the numbers.
